A Detailed Description of the Virtual Walk on this Video Your 60 minute Florence Walking Tour begins in Piazzale Michelangelo, with its breathtaking view of the city of Florence.  You turn, pass by a small cafe, and begin a long walk... down the beautiful tree-lined ramp beside the Viale Giuseppe Poggi.  At the bottom of the hill, you pass through the Porta San Miniato, built in 1320, and a part of the city walls of Florence.  Once inside the walls, you first follow the Via S. Miniato...  then the Via di S. Niccolo.  then one more turn and across the Ponte alle Grazie...  where the camera turns and pauses to take in the view of the Arno River and the Ponte Vecchio in the distance.  Next, we walk to Via de' Cerretani and the Duomo of Florence.  The camera pauses to look up at the magnificence of the Duomo...  and Brunelleschi's famous dome. The camera turns towards the Baptistry and the famous Gates of Paradise, by Lorenzo Ghiberti.  Walking to the rear of the Duomo, you discover a copy of Michaelangeo's David in the Piazza del Duomo.  Next, walking down the Via dei Servi, we come to...  the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata, a Renaissance-style basilica... whose construction was begun in 1469 and completed in 1481.  Then you walk down a street almost unchanged since Medieval times...  until you enter the Piazza della Repubblica where...  the street market has typical Italian cheeses...  and meats, among other things for sale.  Leaving the street market, we pass a colorful Italian carousel...  and walk toward the Piazza della Signoria...  the focal point of the city of Florence and the political hub of the city.  We first turn and walk up the steps and between the famous Medici lions...  and into the Loggia dei Lanzi, an open-air sculpture gallery of antique and Renaissance art.  After pausing to admire some of the Renaissance sculpture, we leave the Loggia dei Lanzi and...  walk over to the Palazzo Vecchio and, on the right, admire Bartolommeo Bandinelli's Hercules and Cacus...  and on the left is a reproduction of Michelangelo's statue, David. The real statue stood in this spot from 1504 to 1873. Today, the original is housed in the Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze.  We next pass through the heavy doors and into the First Courtyard of the Palazzo Vecchio...  and the camera looks up to admire the intricately painted ceiling vaults.  And in this niche inside the First Courtyard stands Samson and Philistine by Pierino da Vinci.  Even the columns are intricately stuccoed.  Before leaving the Palazzo Vecchio, we stop to admire the copy of the Putto with Dolphin fountain by Verrocchio.  Once back in the Piazza della Signoria, we walk over to the famous Fountain of Neptune by Bartolomeo Ammannati.  Then we turn and walk through the Piazzale degli Uffizi and past the famous Uffizi Gallery, one of the most prominent art museums in the world and open to the public since 1765.  At the far end, we leave the Piazzale degli Uffizi and... Then, after crossing a narrow street, we pause to view the Arno River and the Ponte Vecchio.  Walking through the archways toward the Ponte Vecchio...  and once there, we take a quick look at the Florentine gold jewelry on display.  After walking across the Ponte Vecchio, we turn left and follow the Arno River eastward a short distance before...  turning down an interesting alleyway, passing a sidewalk cafe and... discovering another narrow street, seemingly unchanged since the Middle Ages. Next we walk to the expansive Piazza di Santa Croce and its famous Basilica di Santa Croce, the principal Franciscan church in Florence.  The Basilica is the largest Franciscan church in the world and contains the tombs of Machiavelli, Michelangelo and Galileo.  After pausing to view the Statue of Dante Alighieri, Florence's most famous son...  and the richly carved doors of Santa Croce...  your 60 minute Florence Walking Tour ends with this view of the Arno River.
